Asphalt in a Bag Products

'Asphalt in a Bag' is the original trade name for permanent cold-mix asphalt sold in hand-portable bags. The product is a patented mix of crushed recycled asphalt, polymer binder and water that pours directly from the bag, compacts under load, and bonds permanently to the surrounding pavement on impact.

Road Solutions AUS is the Australian manufacturer and supplier of Asphalt in a Bag products across all four cold-mix grades. This page covers the chemistry, the application sequence and the supply channels.

The Asphalt in a Bag chemistry

The patented formulation combines crushed recycled asphalt, a co-polymer binder and water. The binder coats the aggregate at factory temperature and stays workable in the bag through 12 months of shelf life. When compacted, the binder activates and creates a permanent structural bond to the surrounding pavement.

The use of recycled asphalt as the aggregate fraction means each bag diverts old pavement from landfill — sustainable repair without compromise on durability.

Why bagged format suits repair work

The bag itself is the supply unit, the storage unit and the application unit. No transfer, no decanting, no on-site mixing. A single operator handles 15 or 20 kg comfortably and applies directly from the bag into the void.

That logistics simplicity is the practical reason bagged cold-mix has displaced kettle-truck hot-mix for repair work across most of Australia.

Range across four gauges

Asphalt in a Bag is available in 5, 7, 10 and 14 mm aggregate grades — match the gauge to the repair depth and traffic load. Same binder chemistry across all grades; different aggregate for different jobs.

Coverage and order planning

One 20 kg bag covers approximately 0.5 square metres at 22 mm thickness. A typical 300 × 300 × 50 mm pothole takes about one 20 kg bag including overfill. Stock 5–10 bags for a small commercial site, a pallet (~50 bags) for fleet or council use.
