Cold Patch Pothole Repair

Cold patch is the trade name for the category of pothole repair products that apply at ambient temperature — no heating, no kettle, no torch. The product arrives pre-mixed in a bag or bucket, pours into the void, compacts, and reopens to traffic immediately.

Road Solutions AUS manufactures permanent cold patch in four aggregate grades. The polymer-modified binder is the modern alternative to bitumen-emulsion throw-and-go patches and the legacy hot-mix-only repair model.

Why cold patch replaced hot mix for repair work

For new pavement and large resurfacing, hot mix is still the standard. For repair work — potholes, edge breaks, utility cuts, trench reinstatement — cold patch has effectively replaced it because the logistics of hot mix (plant within 90 minutes, dry weather window, paving crew) don't match the operational reality of repair.

Cold patch fits the repair model: small jobs, dispersed locations, weather happens whenever it happens, and the repair needs to be done now.

What 'permanent' cold patch means

Not all cold patch is permanent. Hardware-store throw-and-go is usually a bitumen-emulsion product that won't last more than a few months. Permanent cold patch — like the Road Solutions AUS range — uses a polymer-modified binder that chemically bonds the patch to the pavement under compaction. The result lasts as long as the surrounding surface.

Grade selection for cold patch work

5 Gauge for fine surface finishes, 7 Gauge as the everyday default, 10 Gauge for heavy traffic, 14 Gauge for deep voids. The choice is driven by aggregate size suited to repair depth and traffic class.

Storage and field stocking

Cold patch keeps for 12 months sealed, which makes it practical to stock at depots, on trucks, and at remote sites. Storm response, alpine winter and tropical wet season operations all benefit from the long shelf life and weather independence of the product.
