DIY Pothole Repair

What you need

  • One bag of cold mix asphalt (7 Gauge for most holes)
  • Stiff broom
  • Square-mouth shovel
  • Hand tamper or a vehicle wheel
  • Work gloves

The 15-minute method

  1. Sweep the hole completely clean.
  2. Square the edges with the shovel.
  3. Pour the cold mix in, overfilling slightly.
  4. Tamp from the edges inward, or drive over with the car twice.
  5. Sweep loose fines off the surface.

How much you need

A 20 kg bag of cold mix covers approximately 0.2 m² at 50 mm depth. For most domestic potholes one bag is enough. Larger or deeper holes may take two or three bags.

Cost

Materials only — a bag of cold mix costs $25–$45 at most stockists. Compare to $400+ for a contractor call-out on a single hole.

When DIY is not enough

  • Multiple connected potholes covering a large area
  • Visible base movement or rutting around the defect
  • Pothole reopens after every fill — base failure

Will the patch hold up to truck traffic?
