Asphalt in a Bag
Standard Potholes
- Remove all loose debris and foreign material from the pothole or damaged pavement with a shovel or broom.
- Apply enough “Asphalt in a Bag” cold patching material to crown the patched area. Compact the product with one of the recommended methods (see below) until almost flush with the existing surface. Allow a 3mm to 5mm crown with feathering (sloped edges) for continued trafficking.
- It is recommended that sand, cone dust or, if greying is required, Portland cement powder be lightly sprinkled over the repaired area to avoid any sticking of the repair area to heavy vehicle tyres.
- In high traffic areas and/or pavements a light dusting of Portland cement may be used over the repaired area. This will ensure that the new asphalt repair does not stick to heavy vehicle tyres and will make Asphalt in a Bag blend in with the appearance of the pavement.
Methods to be used to compact this product are:
- Pedestrian roller
- Vertical/upright rammer
- Small 1-2 tonne roller
- Wheel roll with the tyres of a vehicle
Ideally we suggest you DO NOT use vibration plates or vibrating rollers to compact this product as the vibration will cause the product to form a loose bond and may crack over time.
Deeper Potholes (or build up work)
For holes 15cm deep or more apply product in 5-7cm layers, compacting Asphalt in a Bag cold patch each time to ensure a “permanent” solution. Remember, the repair is only as strong as the substrate or base so this is a vital point to be aware of.
Utility Cuts
On conventional utility cuts or when Asphalt in a Bag is being applied over disturbed sub base aggregates, it is necessary to compact the base as you would in any standard pavement repair application. Again, ensure compaction of material is done every 5 to 7 cm of product laid. Due to the tenacious bond of the instant pothole repair, once applied, Asphalt in a Bag pothole patch can take traffic immediately and requires no setting time.
***IMPORTANT NOTE***
- Do not use diesel or any other hydrocarbon or chemicals during installation as this will affect the structure of the cold patch and cause failures.
- Asphalt in a Bag is compatible with conventional hot mix asphalt and may be overlaid as required.
- Ensure repairs, layers or build up works exceed 20mm-25mm in thickness as a minimum when not attached to a thicker body of product. Thin layers will be prone to cracking when under stress from vehicles or general use. We reiterate, the repair is only as good as the base it is built upon.
- The minimum compression achieved is approximately the size of the mix (e.g. Mix 10) times 2.5, i.e. 10 x 2.5 = 25mm minimum compression.
- The maximum compression achieved is approximately the size of the mix (e.g. Mix 10) times 4, i.e. 10 x 4 = 40mm maximum compression.
- Asphalt in a Bag pothole patch should NOT have any tack coating or this tack coat will become a weak area and cause failures.
- Asphalt in a Bag pothole patch is designed to be used in wet and damaged areas if required, however the ideal is still in fine weather.
Crack Filler ACF-1 Directions
Just clean crack, shake, snip open and squeeze into crack. ACF-1 is a specially formulated Latex Rubber Polymer Blend that provides extended life and greater durability than ordinary cold pour formula crack fillers. It is designed for use in cracks up to 9 mm wide. ACF-1 is fortified with latex and asphalt binders to strengthen bond and has a low VOC Formula. Application: Remove all dirt, grass, old crack filler and debris from crack to be filled. Shake bottle well before using. ACF-1 is pre-mixed. DO NOT DILUTE. For deep/large cracks we recommend using DP-1 Crack Filler. Alternatively, fill larger cracks with sand or backer rod to within 6mm of the surface before applying ACF-1 Crack Filler. ACF-1 Crack Filler will dry to the touch within 30 minutes and, depending on outdoor conditions, should be fully dry within 24-48 hours. Caution: Do not allow product to freeze. Apply when temperature is at least 12 degrees Celcius and rising. Do not apply if rain is forecast for 24 hours or if the crack is larger than 9mm. Clean Up: fresh crack filler will clean up with soap and water and dried crack filler will clean up with turpentine.
Crack Filler DP-1 Directions
DP-1 is a ready-to-use, professional grade butyl rubber and asphalt-based compound that fills and seals cracks in asphalt surfaces without heating or mixing.
It flows easily into cracks to form a long-lasting barrier which keeps out water to prevent ice damage and pavement deterioration. It offers excellent adhesion and resists crumbling and drying out caused by temperature changes, ultraviolet light and severe weather conditions.
This product won’t run or bubble in hot weather or become brittle or crack in cold weather. It dries to a black matte finish that may be coated with asphalt or tar based driveway dressings. Resists oil, grease, salt and heavy traffic.
Application:
- Remove loose, damaged concrete or blacktop from surface. Crack surface must be free of grease, oil and other foreign matter. Sweep or blow surface with compressed air to remove all mud, dirt, dust and other loose debris.
- Cut nozzle at a 45º angle to desired bead size.
- Puncture inner foil seal.
- Load cartridge into caulking gun.
- Fill cracks and gaps with DP-1.
- After application, a more uniform fill or neater appearance may be obtained by wetting a trowel or putty knife with mineral spirits and tooling sealant slightly.
- Allow to cure for 24 hours before direct exposure to water. Wait 24 hours before coating with asphalt or tar-based driveway dressing.
- Apply in temperatures above 4 degrees Celcius.
Caution: Do not allow product to freeze. Do not apply if rain is forecast for 24 hours or if area being repaired is below the waterline. Not to be used for expansion joints or areas subject to joint movement.
Clean Up: Excess uncured sealant can be cleaned up with mineral spirits. Do not use mineral spirits to clean skin. Excess cured sealant must be cut or scraped away.
Golders Associates Ltd most recent Marshall Stability tests indicate that Asphalt in a Bag permanent cold patch obtains 22000 N in laboratory tests making the product just as strong as hot mix after curing.
In summary, it is far cheaper to repair a small pothole once, permanently, than to repeatedly repair large damaged areas. We believe that our product can offer you this capability. Also, with new road construction, our product is equal to hot mix bitumen in quality but with the obvious advantages in storage and flexibility in your application.
